South African wines have received global recognition at the glamorous black tie awards ceremony for The Six Nations Wine Challenge in Sydney, Australia. Vilafonté Series C 2016 took top honours, winning the New World Bordeaux blends class Trophy wine of the show. Congratulations also go to Cederberg Wines Ghost Corner Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc for winning the Sauvignon Blanc trophy. This is a big win for South Africa and a source of considerable national pride.
South African convener and Six Nations Judge Michael Fridjhon had the following observation: “The Bordeaux blends class is one of the most contested categories in the show, with all the participating nations well known and well respected for at least some of the Bordeaux varieties. To take this trophy from Napa, Coonawarra, Maipo and Okanagan producers is no small achievement and speaks of the strength of the class in South Africa as well as the seamless perfection of the Vilafonté Series C.”
Ross Anderson, Director of the Six Nations Wine Challenge, announced; “Vilafonté Series C 2016 has taken top Trophy honours in the Bordeaux blends class at the 2019 Six Nations Wine Challenge. The field was stacked with some of the very finest wines from the New World and prevailed by a significant margin over the others …”
The Six Nations Wine Challenge is a globally recognised annual wine event exploring the very best New World Wines. The only wine show in the world where wines are entered following an invitation from each country’s most respected wine writer and judge. A focused blind tasting competition with the objective to find the best.
Vilafonté, planted in 1995, has a long-stated goal to produce a wine that can stand proudly among the best in the world. Farming the ancient vilafontes soil on the bench of the Simonsberg Mountains, has never been for the faint of heart. The Vilafonté team, founded by Mike Ratcliffe, Zelma Long and Phil Freese have built substantial experience embracing the challenges of the low potential soils, nurturing the vines to consistently produce tiny berries with elevated intensity of concentration. Vilafonté is an expression of the ancient terroir. A collectable wine with gravitas and integrity, reflecting a two and a half decade journey.
Vilafonté Series C 2017, the new vintage, is available now for pre-order, ahead of the official 1st November 2019 global release.
